Life & Optional Life Insurance | 60+ Plan

Provides additional coverage for you and your spouse, offering financial protection.

Important update


As of April 1, 2026, Optional Life Insurance is closed to new enrolments and increases in coverage. Members looking for new or additional life insurance coverage may apply through the Freedom to Chooseâ„¢ program offered by Canada Life. If you already have Optional Life Insurance, your existing coverage remains in place.



Coverage Amount:


If you currently have Optional Life Insurance, your coverage may include:

You and your spouse may have coverage of up to $500,000, subject to approval by Canada Life at the time of enrolment.



Age Limits:


If you currently have Optional Life Insurance, the following provisions may apply:

  • Under 65: Coverage may have been obtained without a medical exam to recover lost coverage if basic life insurance was reduced due to insufficient hours.

  • Between ages 65 and 69: You and your spouse may have coverage in units ranging from $5,000 to $500,000. A medical exam may have been required, subject to approval.



Conversion:


If coverage ends before age 65, you or your spouse may be able to convert your coverage to an individual life insurance policy within 31 days without needing proof of good health.



Exclusions:


Suicide Clause:No benefit is paid if the insured commits suicide within two years of purchasing or increasing optional life insurance. In such cases, Canada Life refunds the premiums received.

Members who wish to obtain new or additional life insurance coverage may apply through the Freedom to Chooseâ„¢ program offered by Canada Life.
